Terms
Terms of Service
These terms are the agreement between you and Viewps AS when you use the Viewps iOS app, take part in its TestFlight beta, or use viewps.com. Please read the section on being outdoors — it is the part that matters most.
At a glance
- Viewps helps you plan. It does not take you up the mountain. It is a planning and information tool, not a guide, not a safety service, and not emergency response.
- Every decision outdoors is yours. Whether to go, whether to continue, and when to turn back are your calls, made with what you can see in front of you.
- Viewps uses AI, and AI can be wrong. Weather, transport, and trail information come from other providers and can be out of date or incomplete.
- In an emergency, call 112. For medical help in Norway, call 113. Never wait for the app.
Who you are agreeing with
Viewps is operated by Viewps AS (organisation number 938 077 460), Schønings gate 9B, 0362 Oslo, Norway. In these terms, “Viewps”, “we”, and “us” mean Viewps AS, and “you” means the person using the service. You can reach us at hello@viewps.com.
By creating an account, signing in, or otherwise using Viewps, you accept these terms. If you do not accept them, please do not use the service. How we handle personal data is described separately in our Privacy Policy, which forms part of this agreement.
Who can use Viewps
You need an account, and you must be at least 16 years old. Keep your login details to yourself — you are responsible for what happens under your account. During the beta, access is granted by invitation and to a limited service area, and we may change or withdraw access.
What Viewps is — and what it is not
Viewps suggests places to go, builds a plan for a day outdoors, and gathers information that is useful for that plan: forecasts, public-transport connections, route descriptions, timings, and packing suggestions. That is the whole of what it does.
Viewps is not:
- a mountain guide, an instructor, or a substitute for training, experience, or local knowledge;
- a safety, tracking, rescue, or emergency service — it cannot see where you are, cannot tell whether you are in trouble, and will not raise an alarm for you;
- a navigation system you should rely on alone — carry a map and compass you can use, and know how to get yourself home without a phone;
- a source of medical, legal, insurance, or professional advice;
- a guarantee that a route, a forecast, a connection, or a plan is suitable, current, or safe for you on the day.
Everything Viewps produces — a suggested route, a timing, a condition summary, a packing list, an assessment that a plan looks fine or looks unwise — is information and a suggestion. It is never an instruction, a certification, or a promise about the real world.
Being outdoors is your responsibility
Hiking and other outdoor activity carry real, unavoidable risk: weather that turns, terrain that is harder than it looked, exposure, rockfall, water, cold, darkness, injury, getting lost, and death. Those risks exist whether or not you use Viewps, and using Viewps does not reduce them.
You are responsible for:
- deciding whether to set out at all, and turning back when conditions, daylight, or how you feel say you should;
- judging honestly whether a route matches your fitness, skill, and experience, and those of anyone with you;
- your clothing, footwear, food, water, navigation, light, and communication equipment;
- checking conditions yourself from official sources before and during the day, and trusting what you can see over what the app said earlier;
- respecting access rules, private land, wildlife, seasonal closures, and local signage, and following the allemannsretten obligations that come with the right to roam;
- anyone you bring with you, including children, and anyone relying on your plan;
- having insurance appropriate to what you are doing.
Telling someone where you are going and when you expect to be back remains the single most useful thing you can do. Viewps does not do it for you.
Weather, transport, and route information
Viewps passes on information from third parties, including MET Norway and Open-Meteo for weather, Entur for public transport, Mapbox and Apple for maps and places, and its own curated route data. That information can be delayed, incomplete, wrong, or superseded, and conditions in the mountains change faster than any forecast. We do not control it and we do not warrant it. Timings, distances, ascent figures, and durations are estimates, not measurements of your day.
Where Viewps shows a source and how fresh the information is, that is there so you can judge it for yourself. Please do.
AI and automated suggestions
You are interacting with an AI system. Viewps uses large language models to interpret what you ask for, to reason about a plan, and to write its replies. AI systems make mistakes: they can misread a request, misjudge a route, or state something with confidence that is simply wrong.
Viewps is built to reduce that risk — computations are done in code rather than by the model, claims are checked against their sources before they are shown, and conservative safety limits are applied outside the model — but no such system is reliable enough to be trusted without your own judgement. Treat its output the way you would treat a well-read friend’s advice, not an authority.
Viewps does not make automated decisions that have legal or similarly significant effects on you.
Beta, changes, and availability
Viewps is early software, currently in beta. It is provided as isand as available. Expect defects, gaps, wrong answers, and interruptions. We may add, change, limit, or remove features, change the service area, or suspend the service, and we do not promise any particular uptime, response time, or that saved plans, chats, or history will be preserved. Keep your own copy of anything you would be sorry to lose.
Viewps is free to use at the moment. If we introduce paid features, we will say so clearly before anything is charged, and you will never be charged without agreeing to it first.
Your content
What you write, capture, and upload stays yours. You give us the permission we need to run the service — to store your content, process it (including sending relevant context to our AI provider), show it back to you, and derive plans, summaries, and remembered preferences from it. That permission lasts as long as we hold the content and exists only to provide and improve Viewps.
Only upload content you are allowed to upload. If you tell Viewps about a hiking companion, keep it minimal, make sure you are permitted to share it, and leave out anything sensitive.
Acceptable use
Please do not:
- break the law, or use Viewps to help anyone else do so;
- present Viewps output as professional guiding, instruction, or a safety assessment to other people, or resell it as such;
- try to break, overload, scrape, reverse-engineer, or circumvent the service, its limits, or its safety behaviour;
- upload content that is unlawful, abusive, or that infringes someone else’s rights;
- use another person’s account, or share yours.
If you break these terms, or if we need to protect other users or the service, we may limit, suspend, or close your account. Where it is reasonable to do so, we will tell you why. You can stop using Viewps and delete your account at any time under Me → Settings → Delete account.
Our intellectual property
The Viewps app, website, name, design, curated route data, and underlying software belong to Viewps AS or its licensors. You get a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable right to use the app for your own outdoor planning, and nothing more. Third-party map, weather, and transport data remain subject to their own providers’ terms.
Liability
We take the trust you place in Viewps seriously, and we are honest about its limits. This section says what we are and are not responsible for. It applies to the fullest extent Norwegian law allows — and no further.
What we do not exclude. Nothing in these terms limits or excludes our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for gross negligence or intent, for fraud, or for anything else that cannot be limited or excluded under Norwegian law. Your statutory rights as a consumer apply in full, whatever these terms say.
What we are not responsible for. Subject to the paragraph above, Viewps AS is not liable for loss or damage arising from your decisions about whether, when, where, and how to go outdoors; from conditions, terrain, or events in the natural world; from information supplied by third parties being wrong, delayed, or unavailable; from a mistaken or incomplete AI suggestion; from the service, your device, your battery, or your connection being unavailable when you wanted it; or from your own or a companion’s acts, omissions, fitness, or equipment.
Limits. Again subject to the first paragraph, we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss, lost data, wasted expenditure, or lost opportunity, and our total liability for all claims relating to the service is limited to the greater of the amount you have paid us in the twelve months before the claim (currently nothing, as the service is free) or NOK 1,000.
If any part of this section is found to be unenforceable, the rest continues to apply.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms as Viewps develops. We will change the “Last updated” date above, and where a change materially affects your rights or obligations we will give you notice in the app or by email before it takes effect. Continuing to use Viewps after a change takes effect means you accept the updated terms; if you do not, please stop using the service and delete your account.
Governing law and disputes
These terms are governed by Norwegian law. If we cannot resolve a disagreement between us directly — and please write to us first, because we would much rather fix it — it may be brought before Oslo District Court. As a consumer, you keep the right to bring proceedings in the courts of your own country of residence where the law gives you that right, and you may take a complaint to Forbrukerrådet or another competent body.
Apps distributed through the App Store
This agreement is between you and Viewps AS only, not with Apple, and Apple is not responsible for the app or its content. Apple has no obligation to provide support or maintenance for Viewps, no warranty obligation, and no responsibility for addressing any claim relating to the app, including product liability, regulatory compliance, or intellectual-property claims. You confirm you are not located in a country subject to a US Government embargo and are not on a US Government prohibited-party list. Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms and may enforce them against you. Your use of the app is also subject to Apple’s own App Store terms of service.
